Optometrist Jobs

An Optometrist examines patient's eyes in order to test their sight, give advice on visual problems and prescribe and fit spectacles or contact lenses when needed. In addition an important function is to assess ocular health and an Optometrist is trained to recognise diseases of the eye, such as glaucoma and cataract, as well as general health conditions such as diabetes.

An Optometrist will often refer cases to an Ophthalmologist (Specialist Eye Doctor) for further treatment if the patient is required.

Most Optometrists work in high street practices which may be independent or part of a regional or national chain. A smaller number work in hospitals alongside other healthcare professionals such as Doctors, Ophthalmologists or Orthoptists. Some optometrists work in academic settings doing research and/or teaching, and also in the optical manufacturing industry.

To practice as an optometrist in the UK, individuals must be registered with the General Optical Council (GOC). They must also continue to update their skills and knowledge throughout their careers.
