Dispensing Optician Jobs

A Dispensing Optician is trained to dispense and fit spectacles, contact lenses and other optical aids according to a prescription that has been written by an Optometrist or Ophthalmologist.  

A Dispenser must have good communication skills as they will be required to advise the patient on various types of lenses and frame choice. The factors that they must consider through consultation with the patient will include an understanding of the lifestyle and style choice of the customer. They must also have a good technical understanding of lens and frame products to ensure a perfect fit for the finished spectacle. 

A Dispensing Optician may also dispense contact lenses and also perform Contact Lens teaches, which involves demonstrating to the patient how to insert, remove and care for the prescribed lens. 

The majority of Dispensing Opticians work in high street outlets for large, multiple-chain optician stores or for independent practices. The role requires extensive use of technical expertise and good customer service skills. Selling is also an important part of the job.
